Masquerade - Detail
RulesBroadly speaking we will be following the International Costumers’ Guild Guidelines. Precise details will be posted here later. In the meantime please check the guidelines on the entry form page. StagingYou can see a map of the Clyde Auditorium here and technical details here. We have a proscenium style stage that is 18m wide (that’s 59 feet feet in American measurements). Please note that we may not use the depth of the stage as per the plans in order to make more space backstage, and the full width will not be available as our MC needs somewhere to stand.
BackstageHaving had a chance to visit the site and tour the theatre, we have found a few challenging issues. The backstage area is not very big. What we thought was a nice big loading bay is actually outside, under a very high roof, and completely open to the elements. There’s not a lot of space backstage, and most of the access involves narrow corridors and stairs. There are lots of dressing rooms, many with their own bathrooms and televisions, but they are mostly small, and not on the same level as the stage. There are some that are down a ramp, the rest are up or down stairs and through the aforementioned narrow corridors. There is, however, a reasonable amount of space in the wings on either side of the stage. Big props can be stored there, and any really hard-to-move entries can use that area. But if you think you’ll need to do this, let us know ASAP. We will allocate space to those who ask, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Anyone using the wings will need to be very quiet, as they are right next to the stage.
Sound and lightingLighting facilities will be up and down, cool and warm washes, and backlighting. We will have static spots but no following spots. Music can be submitted on cassette, CD, minidisk or DAT. There will be no microphones on stage. Entry FormThe entry form is printed in Progress Report #4 (online here). There is also an electronic version of the form on this site. See here for guidelines for providing the necessary information. PrizesWe will be having the usual prize categories of juniors, novices, journeyman and masters, with prizes for both presentation and, should you wish to be judged, workmanship. In addition we will have prizes for Chaos Costuming entries, and an audience appreciation prize. Other prizes may be added later, and doubtless the judges will come up with a few of their own. Chaos CostumingThis is one of those British traditions about which you have heard so much. We understand that some American conventions do this too, but as it isn't common at Worldcons we are making a special fuss about it. Basically we kind of like the idea of people trying making a costume on the day. It is sort of like Junkyard Wars for costumers. And it is a great idea if you don't want to have to ship a costume to the UK. For a full explanation click here.
We have a nice room allocated in the Armadillo for chaos costuming. If arranged auditorium-style, it would
Fan PhotographyBecause of the lack of space backstage there is nowhere to set up the traditional photo area. Furthermore it would be difficult to get contestants to the front of the auditorium, where there is space, because of the narrow corridors. We are currently looking at space elsewhere on the site, and we are all fervently hoping that it doesn't rain.
Costuming ResourcesSo you have arrived in Glasgow and you have forgotten some vital element of your costume. Don’t panic. First of all, try the Chaos Costuming room, you never know what they might have. If that fails, or you just want to go shopping for cool new fabrics, try the following local establishments.
