For immediate release: Friday 6 December 2002
Interaction Hosts UK Worldcon History Website
Interaction today announced the official launch of a new Website
commemorating the history of World Science Fiction Conventions held
in the UK. The site, located at
http://www.worldcon.org.uk/, contains
information on each of the six UK Worldcons, starting with Loncon I
in 1957 and ending with Interaction in 2005.
Statistical buffs may find some unusual symmetries in the data.
The six Worldcons are spread neatly over as many decades (1957, 1965,
1979, 1987, 1995 and 2005) and move around the country in pairs - two
in London, then two in Brighton and finally two in Glasgow. 22 Guests
have been honoured (Brian Aldiss twice). And attendance has grown
from just 268 in 1957 to an expected 5,000 in 2005.
In addition to the six UK Worldcons, two Continental European
Worldcons have also been held, at Heidelberg, Germany in 1970, and
The Hague, Netherlands in 1990.
The website includes awards information, artists work from
convention publications, and photographs and other reminiscences from
each event. Additional material is always welcome and can be sent to
Interaction at
webmaster@interaction.worldcon.org.uk.
