Science Programme

Interaction Science Programme

By Simon Bradshaw - Science Programme Area Head

This has been an exciting year for space missions, with the highlight being Cassini/Huygens mission to Saturn and in particular the Huygens probe landing on Titan. We are therefore especially delighted to welcome Professor David Southwood as our Special Guest; Professor Southwood is not only Director of Science for the European Space Agency, but has been deeply involved with the Cassini/Huygens mission itself. We will also be featuring updates on other missions, both current and proposed, and panels on the current hot topics in space science and astronomy.

Getting into space is another hot topic for Interaction. Space tourism has been discussed at many Worldcons, but this will be the first since Paul Allen and Burt Rutan won the X-Prize. Does this herald a new private-enterprise space age? Is it a blind alley? Or is human spaceflight a dream of the last century? These and similar questions will be up for discussion, whilst we will be hearing about the latest news in low-cost space access from speakers such as Aleta Jackson of XCOR.

Closer to home, the digital frontier is often in the news: file-sharing, viruses, spam, trojans and a host of such terms are now part of everyday life. We'll be featuring items on many areas of online activity, but will have a special focus on the 'copyright wars'. Is there such a thing as 'intellectual property', and if there is, how do we protect it in the age of the Internet? How far can 'Open Source' go? Expect to see Cory Doctorow and a range of other speakers discuss Creative Commons, privacy and similar issues.

This is only a quick overview of the areas the Science Programme will range over. From the biology of Hobbits to the technology of Jules Verne (who died a century ago this year), from serious issues to some very silly science indeed, we'll be providing a wide-ranging and, we hope, captivating Science Programme. Last but not least, we are working with the Glasgow Science Centre, just opposite the SECC, towards arranging a number of joint events. Look out for further details!

Finally, here is the highlight list of our proposed participants as of 10 April 2005. You will find a full list of all programme participants, including links to their web sites where available, here.
